The Department of Animal Health of Denmark will start a monitoring campaign in September aimed at controlling the use of zinc on pig farms.

The campaign, that will be carried out from September to November 2018, and that will include some 200 farms on which the use of zinc has been prescribed in the last 6 months, is a continuation of the campaign initiated in 2016, in which the Danish Veterinary Administration focused on the correct registration and use of animal drug products and that found violations in two special situations: the veterinarian's instructions were not followed and there were not enough registrations regarding the use of medical zinc. Besides the general requirements for the use of medicinal zinc, the campaign will focus on the regulations regarding feed in relation to the use of zinc.

In the last years, zinc consumption in Danish pig production has been in the spotlight due to the role of zinc in the development of resistances and its environmental impact.
