The Danish parliament has signed, with a wide political agreement, an action plan to reduce the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Danish pig production.

Although Denmark has a low antibiotic consumption in pig production, the latest data show that in 70% of the pigs farms SARM CC398 is to be found.

Although the Ministry of Agriculture of Denmark praises the international approach of the action plan, it considers the antibiotic use reduction goal very ambitious bearing in mind the great effort carried out by the Danish farmers, that have lowered their use considerably in the last years (-17% since 2009), allowing Denmark to be placed among the countries in the UE with a lower antibiotic consumption in livestock production.
