On 15 July, Jacob Jensen, Denmark’s Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, presented the main agricultural priorities of the Danish Presidency of the Council to the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. Denmark holds the rotating Presidency until the end of 2025.
According to Jensen, the Presidency will focus on easing the administrative burden for farmers while continuing to promote the green transition and improve animal welfare. A key priority will be to conclude the ongoing negotiations on the common agricultural policy (CAP) simplification package, while also starting discussions on the CAP framework beyond 2027.

Several Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) raised concerns regarding fair conditions for EU farmers in the context of the Mercosur Agreement and animal welfare standards. Questions were also asked on how the Presidency intends to support EU protein and fertiliser self-sufficiency and to provide stronger backing for organic farming.
Other MEPs highlighted the importance of ensuring that the green transition does not undermine the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector. The Presidency’s commitment to balancing simplification with ambitious climate and sustainability goals will therefore be a central theme in the months ahead.
