While the mandatory hospital pen area is 2.5%, SEGES proposes to increase this depending on the feeding system.

After a transition period, which began in 2011 and ended in 2020, it is now a requirement for all pig farms with sows to have a minimum of 2.5 percent of the stalls (in relation to the number of free gestating sows) allocated for the hospital pens.

However, SEGES Pig Production's recommendation is for this space to be between 3 and 5 percent if electronic feeding is used. If the gestation barn is equipped with floor feeding or wet feeding, where there is competition for feed, the recommendation is a 10 percent space allowance for the hospital pens.
