The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) confirmed on Thursday, May 15, the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus on a poultry farm located in the municipality of Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul. This is the first outbreak of HPAI detected on a commercial poultry farm in Brazil.
The containment and eradication measures laid out in the national contingency plan have already been initiated.

MAPA is also communicating officially with the entities of the production chains involved, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the Ministries of Health and the Environment, as well as Brazil's trading partners.
The Brazilian Veterinary Service has been trained and equipped to face this disease since the early 2000s.
Over the years, to prevent the entry of this disease into the Brazilian commercial poultry farming system, several actions have been taken, such as monitoring wild birds, epidemiological surveillance in commercial and subsistence poultry farming, continuous training of technicians of official and private veterinary services, sanitary education, and implementing surveillance at the points of entry for animals and their products into Brazil.
These measures were crucial and proved to be effective and efficient in delaying the disease's entry into Brazilian commercial poultry farming over the past almost twenty years.
