Belarus: scarcity of pig meat and rise in the prices

The government of Belarus has confirmed that the country faces a shortage of pig meat due to the African swine fever.

Due to the presence of African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks, the Minister of Economy of Belarus, Mr. Nicholas Snapkou, informed that the population of pigs dropped by 20% on the industrial pig farms and up to by half on the small-sized farms.

This so drastic drop in production has entailed a significant rise in the prices, which have increased more than in other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Kazakhstan). For instance, the price of neck meat almost doubled in a month, going from BYR93,000/kg (US$8.89/kg) to BYR175,000/kg (US$16.8/kg).

African swine feverAfrican swine fever is one of the most important viral diseases in pigs. It is a systemic disease and is notifiable in most countries, that affects domestic and wild swine. There are no effective vaccines or treatments. It does not affect humans.
