On December 30, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina reported the temporary suspension of corn exports by suspending the registration of Affidavits of Sale Abroad (DJVE) for corn whose shipment start date is prior to March 1, 2021, when the new 2020/21 season of the grain formally starts, with the exception of Pisingallo corn.

This decision is based on the need to ensure the supply of the grain for the sectors that use it as raw material in their transformation processes, basically the production of animal protein such as pork, chicken, eggs, milk and feedlot animals, where corn represents a significant portion of their production costs.

To date, 34.23 million tons of corn have been authorized for export for the 2019/20 season, out of a theoretical exportable total of 38.50 million tons, that is, 89% has been fulfilled.

The aim of the measure is that the remaining 4.27 million tons are available for domestic consumption, in order to ensure supply during the summer months when the supply of grain tends to become short.

Eventually, and depending on how supply and demand evolve, and based on the prospects for the 2020/21 corn harvest, the Ministry will evaluate the resumption of corn exports.
