The European Commission has published the Alert and Cooperation Network (ACN) 2024 report, which, for the first time, incorporates notifications related to animal welfare and companion animals, thanks to the establishment of new specialized networks that facilitate the exchange of information between Member States.
The Animal Welfare Network works to ensure compliance with EU legislation throughout the life cycle of animals, from breeding and transport to slaughter. This development represents a significant step towards more comprehensive surveillance in the EU, covering not only food safety but also ethical and animal health aspects.

The report points to an 8% increase in the total number of notifications (9,460) compared to 2023. Food safety-related alerts grew by 12%, with 5,250 notifications. Fruits and vegetables were the most non-compliant products, mainly due to pesticide residues. Numerous cases of mislabeling were also reported, including unauthorized claims on food supplements.
