Understanding the practical value : The Concept of Introducing Young Gilts
By Professor Daniel C. L. Linhares
How to set up an Acclimation program with iso Gilts?
• Option A: The acclimation compartment is operated as “all in all out” for 12 weeks. First it is loaded with gilts between 4 and 15 weeks of age, then closed for 12 weeks and gilts getting vaccinated. Once opened, the gilts are moved to the Gilt development unit (GDU) and a new cycle begins.

• Option B: As opposed to the previous concept, here only the isolation barn is operated as “all in all out”. These gilts will stay in isolation/quarantine for 4 weeks, until they are confirmed negative for the major pathogens and moved to the GDU, which is operated as continuous flow. As the gilts grow, their demand in pen size increases too. After 16 weeks gilts will begin to be moved into breeding/gestation from the oldest batch.
