logoThe WelFarmers project is a collaborative initiative aimed at improving the welfare of pigs within the European Union. Funded by the Horizon Europe Program, the project has established eight regional networks in Denmark, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Romania, France and Ireland. Each network brings together pig farmers, advisors, veterinarians and researchers to tackle the challenges posed by the upcoming changes in the EU pig welfare legislation.

Within the framework of the project, each regional network has identified good practices for four key topics:

  • Ban of cages
  • Pigs with undocked tails
  • Avoiding pain in castration
  • Space allowance and flooring

The complete list of collected good practices is already available on the WelFarmers website.

From this extensive collection, five good practices per topic have been selected. This selection is also published on the project’s website, and in the coming days, thematic reports and abstracts of each best practice will be made available. These abstracts include a summary of each selected good practice, the benefits observed, practical implementation details, levels of adoption across different regions, and barriers and enablers for implementation.

In the comings weeks, the three winning good practices for each topic will be announced and shared on the website.

Stakeholders and professionals across the swine sector in Europe are invited to follow the WelFarmers project via its website and social media channels, where regular updates, publications and success stories are shared.
