In the last few years a significant number of producers have restocked or expanded their herds through organic growth. In these situations it is very important to keep a close eye on parity distribution since, over time, there tends to be a drift towards keeping older, less productive sows, says Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company ACMC Ltd.

Gilt inputs should therefore be carefully planned to ensure that there is no need to keep old sows to make up the service targets.
