IRTA-CReSA will be the second Spanish center within the network (Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CBMSO), from Madrid, is already a member) and will be the third center devoted to the animal health research, together with the Veterinary Public Health Institute (IZSVe), from Italy, and the Pirbright Institute, from the United Kingdom.

The GVN mission is to strengthen medical research and response to current viral causes of human disease and to prepare for new viral pandemic threats. GVN meets its mission in three ways: support for cutting edge research, public education and advocacy. GVN will expand IRTA-CReSA’s international reach, offer new opportunities for collaboration with the top virus researchers around the world, and will help us further our goal of achieving “one world, one health”.

IRTA-CReSA is an international leader in research on animal health and its implications for human health. With an enhanced Biosecurity level-3 (BSL-3) laboratory facility, CReSA’s multidisciplinary research groups are focused on basic science, epidemiology, and vaccine and diagnostic development for notifiable zoonotic diseases such as West Nile Virus, Rift Valley Fever, Chikungunya, Bluetongue, Schmallenberg, Avian Influenza, MERS-coronavirus, and pestiviruses; as well as endemic animal viruses that cause significant economic losses to agriculture such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, porcine circovirus type 2, and swine influenza.

The GVN partners are the World Health Organization (WHO), World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, US Army Medical Research and Material Command, US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
