This year's European Pig Producer (EPP) Congress in Kolding, Denmark, was all about the future: under the theme “Future Pig Farming”, more than 270 European pig farmers, experts and industry partners united to discuss the future direction of pig farming in Europe.
The opening speech highlighted the core issue: The industry is facing far-reaching changes. Ecological and social change, volatile markets, political uncertainties and the increasing complexity of farm management pose high demands - and at the same time offer opportunities for a fresh approach.

Technology is a key part of the answer
Automation, data-driven systems, artificial intelligence and digital tools open up new opportunities for efficiency, animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Precision and smart farming helps to use resources in a more targeted manner and make processes more sustainable. However, one thing was made equally clear at the congress: Technology does not replace the expertise and responsibility of the farm manager and staff.
The future of pig farming will not be determined solely by technology, but by the ability of farmers to embrace change, make informed decisions and actively engage in dialog with society, politicians and market partners.
The main topics of the congress included
- Strategies for economically viable and sustainable pig farming
- Practical examples from Denmark for data-based animal health and management systems
- New business models and marketing channels in an international context
- Requirements for transparency and communication with consumers

Cooperation along the value chain as the key to securing the future
As the host country, Denmark provided the ideal setting for the congress: With great openness, particularly for innovation, the Danish colleagues presented best-practice farms, the latest technologies and their experience in implementing national strategies. Their professionalism and general openness to exchange during the event reflect Denmark's pioneering role in European pig production.
The EPP Congress 2025 impressively demonstrated that European pig farming is ready for change - technologically, strategically and at a human level. While the challenges are complex, the know-how, innovation prowess and sense of responsibility of the producers form a solid foundation for sustainable development.
