The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine has welcomed Dr. Talita Resende as its newest food animal diagnostician and member of its faculty.
Resende joined the college’s Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) as an assistant professor in May 2025. She brings an extensive background in food animal diagnostic medicine in both academic and laboratory roles. Her work spans swine and poultry infectious diseases, autogenous vaccines (also known as custom vaccines), and veterinary pathology and histology.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Resende join the veterinary diagnostic team at the University of Minnesota,” said Montse Torremorell, professor and VPM chair. “Her extensive background in food animal production, diagnostics, and research, and her proactive approach interacting with producers and veterinarians will be an asset for the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the food animal industries in Minnesota and beyond.”
Resende’s research interests focus on swine, ranging from basic science, such as pathogenesis of intestinal infectious agents, especially Lawsonia intracellularis, to epidemiological aspects of swine infectious diseases and field-applied research, such as the development of diagnostic tools for endemic and emerging swine infectious diseases.
“The University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory shaped how I approach swine health and diagnostics,” Resende said. “I'm excited to be back—this time to support the industry and help train the next generation of veterinarians and diagnosticians.”
Resende completed her PhD in veterinary medicine with a focus on swine health in 2019 at the University of Minnesota. She earned her master’s degree in animal pathology in 2015 and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2012 at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
