Kristīne Lamberga graduated Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Latvia in 1999 and in 2006 gained master’s degree in veterinary sciences. Currently she is working to her PhD thesis what is related to the African swine fever control. Since 2000 she works in a Food and Veterinary Service of Latvia (FVS). For the last thirteen years she is a Director of Veterinary Surveillance Department.  

Before that for almost six years she was a Head of Animal Infectious Disease Surveillance Division (FVS). Kristīne has been a member of working groups, such as the Nordic-Baltic Veterinary Contingency Group, the EU Task Force Rabies Subgroup and attended the SCOFCAH meetings in Brussels as a national expert. Kristīne is OIE National Focal Point of Communication. She has an international experience in a Twinning projects, TAIEX missions and as a tutor of “Better Training for Safer Food” (BTSF) trainings organized by EU Commission.  

Since Latvia became infected with African Swine Fever (ASF) in 2014, Kristine has been in charge to implement the surveillance system of ASF both in wild boar populations and for domestic pig sector. This included regular meetings at national and international level – with colleagues from other ASF affected countries and ASF international experts to discuss and find common solutions for a disease control.  

Particular attention has been paid to create and implement biosecurity systems for domestic pig holdings in Latvia – commercial farms and backyards, to protect pig population from ASF virus. When outbreaks occurred, Kristine was responsible to implement the disease eradication measures in the affected farms, conducting epidemiological investigations, as well as setting up of protection and surveillance zones around the outbreaks. This requested efforts to build awareness among all players – pig industry, hunters associations, local governmental institutions, practicing veterinarians, as well as to provide permanent communication with public.
