If my farrowing rate is lower than 85% but the number of returns to estrus, abortions, and empty sows are all within acceptable limits, I must consider the culled pregnant sows.
Sometimes empty sows are sent directly to the slaughterhouse and are not serviced, creating what is known as culled pregnant sows.
Culled pregnant sows are all those sows that are sent to the slaughterhouse after being serviced due to reproductive problems, locomotor problems, diseases, poor body condition, old age, etc. This means a loss of farrowings.
If a sow returns to estrus several times and is sent to the slaughterhouse it will not be considered a return to estrus, it will be a culled pregnant sow due to returns. The same happens if a sow aborts and is sent to the slaughterhouse: it will be a culled pregnant sow due to abortion.
The percent of sows culled among sows serviced should always be less than 2%.
