The EU countries have slaughtered 5 million more pigs during the first semester of 2015 in comparison with 2014 (+4%). During the same period, US has increased its slaughterings by some 4 million heads (+7%).

In the EU, the number of slaughtered pigs follows the downward trend of this year with -3.4% of pigs slaughtered in May in comparison with the previous year. Of the top producers, only Spain (+1.3%), Poland (+3.8%) and the UK (+2.5%) had a higher production in May 2014 than in May 2013.

In June 2014, the number of slaughtered pigs dropped again in US (-1.2%) and Canada (-18.7%) when compared with June 2013. This decline adds up to the fall during the previous months, as during the 2nd quarter of 2014 there was a drop by 4.5% (US) and by 8.1% (Canada) regarding the number of slaughtered pigs.

In April there was a drop in the monthly marketed pigs in the main European countries: -2.8% globally, compared to April 2013. The main producers showed different trends: Germany and Spain reduced the number of slaughterings by 3.5%, while Denmark (-11.5%) and The Netherlands (-13.5%) had more significant reductions. France was almost stable (+0.3%), while Poland had a very remarkable increase (+23%).

United States confirmed a reduction in the monthly marketed pigs in May: -6.5% compared to May 2013. When comparing the data of the last three months (March, April and May) of 2014 with the those of the same months of the previous year, the decline in the number of slaughtered pigs is -6.3% in the US and -1.0% in Canada.

The data regarding the slaughterings confirm that the number of slaughtered animals in Europe is still falling. Last August the drop was of some 2 million heads (9.6%) with respect to the previous year and of more than two million heads (10.3%) with respect to July of this same year.

In spite of the downward trend in the number of slaughtered pigs, in July we see a rise in the majority of the countries (more than half a million with respect to July 2012).

Monthly data from May show a slight downward trend in most of the main European producing countries with respect to the previous month and, especially, with respect to the same month of the previous year (2.2% global fall).
