Vomitoxicosis

Vomitoxin is a mycotoxin producing rejection of feed, resulting in slow growth of pigs.

Alternative names: Micotoxins, vomitoxin, DON Deoxynivalenol, Fusarium

Information

Vomitoxin causes vomiting and a rejection of feed. The intoxication of swine is limited, because animals refuse food, but causes a reduced production.

Symptoms

Sows, nursery and fattening

  • Vomiting.
  • Rejection of feed.
  • Slow growth.

Causes / Contributing Factors

  • Crops affected with high humidity levels.

Diagnosis

  • It is very difficult to make the diagnosis because sometimes the concentration of DON is low and there are several other mycotoxins present in feed.

Control/Prevention

  • Removal of suspected feed.
  • Use adsorption products in feed.
