During the first half of 2025, Spain has registered a major increase in its imports of live animals from the Netherlands, both in the categories of piglets and pigs raised for slaughter. According to available data, 1,489,198 piglets were imported between January and June, representing a growth of 26.71% compared to the same period in 2024. This is the highest volume in the last decade, consolidating an upward trend that was only interrupted in 2019 and 2020.
Since 2016, the number of Dutch piglets imported by Spain has increased more than 13-fold, from 114,111 head to nearly 1.5 million in 2025. This growth bears testimony to the high Spanish demand for animals for fattening.

There has also been a significant increase in the number of pigs raised for slaughter. In the first half of 2025, 31,930 animals were imported, up 50.61% on the 2024 figure. Although the figures are still far from the peak recorded in 2022 (over 52,000 head), this new increase spells a possible recovery after the declines experienced in 2023 and 2024.
The flow of live animals between the Netherlands and Spain continues to consolidate as a key axis of the pig trade in Europe.
