In the first nine months of 2025, pig production reached 16.6 million head. After four years of decline, to varying degrees, it saw a slight 0.5% recovery year-on-year. However, it remains 3.9% below the average for 2020-2024, due to the contraction in the sow herd.
This decline is partially offset by the increase in the average weight of pigs at slaughter, which exceeds that recorded in the first nine months of 2024.

Clearly down from the peak reached in 2023, the average cost of pig feed nevertheless remains high, despite a slight year-on-year decline of 0.8%. The farm-gate price also remains high despite an 8.2% year-on-year decrease.
From January to September 2025, the pig price averaged €1.99/kg carcass weight, down 8.5% compared with last year, but well above the average of the past five years.
In terms of foreign trade, between January and September 2025, pork imports increased by 4.0% year-on-year in volume, mainly from Germany and Italy, while purchases from Spain declined. Conversely, exports fell by 2.9%, particularly those to the main European partners (Italy, the Netherlands) and certain Asian countries. As a result, the foreign trade deficit widened compared to 2024, both in volume and value.
French consumption is on the rise again: up 2.3% year-on-year and up 1.6% compared to the 2020-2024 average. With a self-sufficiency rate of 98.2%, French pork production does not fully meet demand, which is reflected in particular in the increase in imports.
