Protecting traditional names of foods of animal origin in the EU

Twelve Member States, including Spain, are asking to protect the names of products such as meat, eggs, and honey from misleading plant names.

The European Union food market increasingly features foods made solely from ingredients of plant origin, which are similar in appearance, taste, and texture to products of animal origin. These plant-based foods are often labeled using the names of products such as meat, eggs, honey, fish, and their derivatives, and may mislead the consumer.

Name protection has long been established at EU level in the dairy sector, through the reserved names figure contained in Regulation (EU) No. 1308/2013. However, there is no other equivalent protection for food names at European level, so Spain, together with eleven other Member States (Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal and Romania), has formally requested the European Commission for a legislative proposal to ensure the protection of traditional names of food of animal origin.
