According to preliminary data on pig slaughter in Portugal in the first quarter of 2025, provided by the INE and published by the GPP, there was a 4.8% increase in the total number of market pigs slaughtered compared to the same period in 2024. This increase equates to 46,080 more pigs slaughtered, going from 962,192 in the first quarter of 2024 to 1,008,272 in 2025.
The total slaughter weight increased by 5.7%, meaning producers sent pigs with a higher average slaughter weight in 2025 than in 2024. The total weight increased from 84,742.5 tons (88.1 kg average) in 2024 to 89,596.3 tons (88.9 kg average) in 2025.

There was a significant 14% drop in piglet slaughter, or 36,441 fewer head, in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. In the first quarter of 2024, 259,879 piglets were slaughtered, whereas this year, the number was 223,438. Slaughter weight fell by 15.1%, from 1,854 tons in 2024 to 1,537.7 tons in 2025. There was no major change in average weight; it fell by 250 g to 6.88 kg, the normal carcass weight for roasting piglets in Portugal.
Regarding cull breeding stock, 12,028 were slaughtered in 2025, compared to 8,374 in 2024, an increase of 43.6%. The total weight increased by 48.8%, rising from 1,225.7 tons (with an average weight of 146.4 kg) in 2024 to 1,823.9 tons (with an average weight of 151.6 kg) in 2025.
A total of 1,243,738 pigs were slaughtered and approved for consumption in the first quarter of 2025, which is a 1.1% increase from 2024 when 1,230,445 pigs were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight was 92,994 tons, which is 5.9% more than the 87,822 tons approved for consumption in 2024.
