Imports of pigs for slaughter in the first quarter of 2025 reached 237,858 head, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2024 (226,041 head). Total weight increased 8.1% to 26,214 tons, with an average weight of 110.2 kg, compared to the 24,252 tons imported in the same period in 2024 (average weight 107.3 kg). More pigs and much heavier ones were imported in 2025 than last year. Importing heavier pigs on average has been trending in the last three to four years.
As for piglets under 50 kg BW, 24,415 head were imported in the first quarter of 2025 with an average weight of 11.5 kg, compared to 22,226 head in 2024 with an average weight of 11.9 kg. That is to say, 2,189 more head were imported this year than in 2024, but with 400 g less BW on average.
Imports of meat and meat products increased by 5.2%, from 24,492 tons in 2024 to 27,391 tons in 2025. Frozen meat saw a 0.8% decrease in imports, from 6,717 tons in 2024 to 6,662 tons in 2025. There was a 16.1% increase in fresh/chilled meat from 17,473 tons in 2024 to 20,280 tons in 2025. Offal increased 48.7%, from 302 tons in 2024 to 449 tons in 2025.
In terms of value in euros, the turnover of the imports increased by 4.6% in 2025 (142.313 million euros) compared to 2024 (136.063 million euros).
