Pig slaughtering grew by 1.5 % in Spain in 2024

Spain slaughtered 53.88 million pigs in 2024 and Catalonia, Aragon and Castile and León were the main producing communities.

According to data from the annual census survey of livestock slaughter at slaughterhouses 2024, over the past year, a total of 53.90 million pigs were slaughtered in Spain, 1.5 % up on the 53.09 million slaughtered in 2023.

The breakdown by category in 2024 was as follows:

  • Piglets: 1,487,717
  • Fatteners: 51,631,130 (+ 14,905 catalogued as "other slaughtering")
  • Culling: 769,847

In terms of average carcass weight, the 2024 figures were as follows:

  • Piglets: 8.76 kg
  • Fatteners: 93.29 kg
  • Culling: 162.12 kg

By autonomous community, the field is led by Catalonia, with over 22.4 million head slaughtered at its slaughterhouses, Aragon comes in second with 11.3 million and Castile and León third with 6.2 million. These three regions accounted for more than 72 % of the national total, consolidating their key role in the Spanish and European pork industry.
