The DLG, a German organization whose aim is to promote technical and scientific progress and to set standards, has certified the first three isoflurane anesthesia devices for use in piglet castration. The certified devices are PigNap 4.0, Anestacia and Porc-Anest 3000.

The DLG expert committee has confirmed that these devices have proven adequate after several months of testing on livestock farms and in the DLG test laboratory.

Background:

Beginning January 1, 2021, castration of piglets without anesthesia will be prohibited in Germany, even castration of piglets less than eight days old. In order to improve animal welfare, the German government has made support available for purchasing anesthesia equipment for the castration of piglets (isoflurane anesthesia). The purchase of such devices follows certification and is financed with up to 60 percent of the device costs or a maximum of up to 5,000 euros per company.
