The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has recognized the ECOGAN computer system, developed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA), for its contribution to more sustainable livestock production in line with international environmental objectives.
The award was presented on October 15 in Rome, during the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the FAO and the World Food Forum, where the best practices and innovations in food security, sustainability, and the transformation of agri-food systems were recognized. ECOGAN was awarded in the category “Sustainable transformation of livestock farming, one health, animal health, and reference centers.”

ECOGAN is a digital tool that houses the General Register of Best Available Techniques (BATs) and allows the emissions and carbon footprint of livestock farming to be calculated at the level of each farm. The calculation algorithms have been developed in conjunction with the Spanish Emissions Inventory System (SEI), managed by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
Thanks to this collaboration, the data entered by livestock farmers in ECOGAN and the BATs are transferred each year to the SEI, making it possible to reflect with high accuracy the actual emissions of the sector and the measures taken to reduce them. This approach contributes to improving the quality of national inventories and demonstrates the Spanish livestock sector's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Of the 408 applications submitted, ECOGAN was one of 20 initiatives selected to be presented at the Global Conference for Sustainable Livestock Transformation, held in Rome from September 29 to October 1, 2025. It also participated in the Innovation Forum, in the session dedicated to innovations in sustainable livestock farming and their climate impact.
