The European Commission has welcomed the support from EU Member States for its RENURE proposal, discussed today in the Nitrates Committee. RENURE, short for REcovered Nitrogen from manURE, are fertilisers made from processed manure. The proposal would allow Member States that choose to do so to authorise the use of RENURE fertilisers above the limits set by the Nitrates Directive for the application of manure and processed manure.
According to the Commission, this measure provides a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilisers, reducing farmers’ costs and strengthening the EU agricultural sector’s strategic autonomy, while ensuring continued protection of water and the environment.

The agreement will now be sent to the European Parliament and the Council for a three-month scrutiny period. If no objections are raised, the Commission will be able to formally adopt the amendment to the Nitrates Directive. The amendment will only apply in Member States that opt to authorise RENURE, and they will be required to transpose it into national law.
