Sow, weaner, and finisher herds with a positive PRRS health status throughout 2024 had a statistically significantly higher consumption of antibiotics compared to herds with a negative PRRS health status, measured as Number of Daily Doses (NDD) per 100 animal days. The difference in the median for antibiotic consumption was 8.8% for sow herds, 8.4% for weaner herds, and 7.7% for finisher herds.

This strengthens the expectation that a national reduction in PRRS can contribute to reducing the consumption of antibiotics for Danish pigs, reinforcing the country's position on the national control program in place to combat PRRS.

This study is based on information about PRRS health status from SPF-Sund's database, with data on antibiotic prescription and number of animal days by Central Husbandry Register (CHR) number from VetStat.
