In collaboration with Inagro and with advice from the Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research (ILVO), a specialized measuring installation has been installed in several pig barns on a West Flemish pig farm. The measurements have now started.

This campaign is part of the provincial nitrogen action plan, which was approved on February 8, 2024. The aim is to gain insight into nitrogen emissions through reliable data and thus stimulate innovation and targeted reduction measures in a next phase.

The measuring installation consists of three parts: a system that measures ammonia in the air, sensors that monitor the behavior of the animals, and mobile, extremely sensitive sensors for accurate measurements. Together they form an integrated measuring system that collects data continuously for 17 months. Inagro and Agro Heugebaert monitor the measurements and manage the installation together with the farmers involved.

These measurements are unique in Flanders. They should help understand how and when ammonia emissions arise, how they evolve, and how they are influenced by animal welfare and barn techniques. This is an important step towards developing and validating new solutions within the Flemish nitrogen policy (PAS).
