The Argentine government expressed its rejection of the recent rating granted by the European Union (EU) under the Deforestation Regulation, considering that, according to the three main criteria established in Article 29 of said regulation, Argentina should be classified as a “low risk” country.
With a pragmatic approach and with the aim of avoiding disruptions in its exports to the EU, both the public and private sectors have been working jointly and constructively with the European Commission, the national authorities of the Member States, and European trade operators to facilitate compliance with the requirements established in the regulation.

In this context, the Argentine government, with the support of the private sector, submitted to the European Commission's Directorate General for the Environment a technical report detailing the situation of the soybean, beef, and forestry value chains, the three most directly affected by the regulation. The document contains updated information and verifiable data that support Argentina's position regarding its “low risk” status.
It was also pointed out that the commitments made regarding deforestation in the framework of the Association Agreement between MERCOSUR and the European Union, announced on December 6, 2024, were not taken into account when determining the risk level assigned to Argentina.
The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of the Ministry of Economy and the Secretariat of International Economic Relations of the Foreign Ministry officially communicated their disagreement to the EU Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience, and Competitive Circular Economy. In the note sent, they requested the European Commission reconsider the country's rating before December 31, 2025, the date on which the regulation will enter into force, and that Argentina be assigned the category of “low risk” in terms of deforestation. The opening of a bilateral dialogue was also requested to address practical aspects related to the implementation of the regulation.
