29% Reduction in Piglet Mortality Achieved with Tonisity Px

In the ever-evolving world of pig farming, improving piglet survival rates is a key concern for producers aiming to enhance productivity and profitability. The Study: A Closer Look

The study (24-041-P-P)  was carried out on a commercial pig farm in China with a herd of 3,500 sows of Landrace, Large White and Duroc genetics. The farm follows a weekly farrowing system, with an average of 12 piglets born alive per litter and a weaning age of approximately 23 days.

A total of 798 piglets from 69 litters participated in the trial. The aim was to assess whether Tonisity Px could have a measurable impact on pre-weaning mortality (PWM)  , a critical factor affecting both animal welfare and farm productivity.

How the Trial Was Conducted

Litters were randomly assigned to two groups:

Tonisity Px group: Piglets received 500 ml of Tonisity Px per litter per day from day 2 to day 8 of life (as a solution) and again for 4 days pre-weaning (solution poured over creep feed). 

Control group: Piglets received no supplementation.

Both groups were kept in the same farrowing rooms to ensure consistent environmental conditions and cross-fostering was done only within each group to maintain the integrity of the trial.

The Results: Tonisity Px Makes a Difference

The results were clear and impressive:

Piglets supplemented with Tonisity Px experienced a 29% reduction in pre-weaning mortality compared to the control group. 

This equates to 22 extra piglets saved per 1,000 born or an additional 0.26 piglets per litter.
