Zero. Zilch. Zinc.
ZnO Informational
With the ZnO ban upon us in the EU since June, the priority turns to alternate ways to keep pigs from declining during the weaning transition without this feed ingredient. Now the focus is on how to best decrease the occurrence of post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) without ZnO, while keeping incidences of dehydration down all while producing healthy pigs. Below outlines how the Tonisity Total Programme is the key to having a successful weaning transition.
What is the purpose of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) in feed?
To control diarrhea in piglets during weaning.
Why is it being banned?
Pharmacological doses over 150ppm of ZnO for piglet feed are being banned for contributing to environmental pollution and the increase in antimicrobial resistance.
Problems created because of the ban:
- Increase in post-weaning diarrhea (PWD)
- Dehydration Mortality Increased vet costs Reduced performance
- Weight loss
- More days to target finishing weight
- Reduced feed efficiency
- Increased workload for farm staff
- Pig welfare concerns
A combination of management and nutritional approaches are presented below in Figure One, with the Tonisity Total Programme being the key to success!
Tonisity Total Programme Ensures a Smooth Weaning Transition:
- Tonisity Px is an isotonic protein drink supplied to pre-wean piglets to nourish the gut, optimise digestive health, and encourage growth
- Tonisity PxW is a post-weaning nutritional support, administered through the waterlines, aimed at fuelling the gut cells, improving post-wean hydration, and enhancing health
- Tonisity Total Programme = Get your pigs off to a great start!
- Rapid start on feed and water
- Better nutrient absorption
- Lower mortality
- Fewer fall-behinds
- Less diarrhea and better gut microbiome profile
- Tonisity Px and PxW can be mixed with live vaccines against PWD Better growth that lasts to finish
