WOAH: African Swine Fever Confirmed in Spain After Three Decades
Knowledge Sharing on African Swine Fever (ASF) at IPVS
The recent confirmation of African swine fever (ASF) in Spain after more than three decades of freedom is a serious reminder that ASF remains a persistent global threat to swine health, food security, and the pork industry worldwide. The re-emergence of ASF in regions previously considered free highlights the virus’s ability to spread silently through wild boar populations and cross borders despite strong biosecurity systems. Given the high mortality, absence of widely available commercial vaccines, and severe trade and economic consequences, ASF control and prevention require global collaboration, rapid information exchange, and shared practical experience.

The International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) provides a critical platform for
• Updating the global pig health community on the latest ASF epidemiology and control strategies
• Sharing field experience in surveillance, biosecurity, wild boar management, and outbreak containment
• Learning from regions with long-term ASF exposure, particularly Asian countries, which have accumulated valuable experience in ASF management and have made significant progress in ASF vaccine research and development
Asia’s practical experience—ranging from large-scale outbreak response to advances in experimental and candidate ASF vaccines—offers important lessons that can support prevention and preparedness efforts in Europe and other regions at risk.
We strongly encourage veterinarians, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to engage actively at IPVS to exchange data, discuss successes and challenges, and strengthen coordinated global efforts to control and ultimately prevent ASF.
ASF is not a regional problem—it is a global one. Only through shared knowledge and collaboration can we reduce its devastating impact.
