BASF tips for rodent control.
  • No known resistance. Controls even rodents resistant to other rodenticides
  • Unique formulation makes it more palatable than most anticoagulant rodenticides
  • Rodent infestation can be controlled more quickly
  • Not bioaccumulative nor does it persist in the environment

July, 2021 - Pest control professionals have long had to contend with the presence of rodents that are resistant to anticoagulants. This can make controlling a rodent invasion take a very long time, and with some anticoagulant rodenticides it may even be impossible.

BASF's Selontra® is able to control all rodents that are resistant to anticoagulants. Selontra® achieves this thanks to its active substance, cholecalciferol. Cholecalciferol is a compound of natural origin with no known resistance in rats and mice which, if applied in toxic doses, produces hypercalcemia leading to fatal consequences for rodents. Rodents lose their appetite 24 hours after consuming the lethal dose of Selontra® which is effective even when there are highly palatable alternative food sources.

In addition, the development of resistance is very unlikely, since it plays a fundamental role in the physiological processes of rodents. To date, no cases of resistance have been reported worldwide. In contrast to cholecalciferol, rodents show resistance to most anticoagulant rodenticides.

"Cholecalciferol has been used on more than one occasion in the development of rodenticides. However, compared to Selontra®, products in which cholecalciferol was previously used proved to be less palatable to rodents," said Sharon Hughes, Technical and Global Marketing Manager for rodenticides at BASF (Professional Pest Control).

"The unique formulation of Selontra® makes it highly palatable and attractive to both rats and mice, even if there are alternative food sources nearby."

Selontra® has other advantages over anticoagulant rodenticides in that the baiting regimen is shorter and achieves pest control faster.

"With Selontra®, pest control experts and professional users can enjoy an effective, fast and reliable baiting program to control rodents in both rural and urban environments," said Sharon Hughes. "In addition, they can rely on a solution that, unlike most anticoagulant baits, works even against anticoagulant-resistant rats and mice."

It is important to note that Selontra® strikes a balance between performance and environmental impact, as its active substance, cholecalciferol, is neither bioaccumulative nor persists in the environment and, in addition, birds are approximately 50 times less sensitive than rodents (quails and mallards tested).
