farmex.gifWhat does the average pig farmer weigh? The answer is 86.06 kg (13st 7lb 12oz) if the sample of producers attending the British Pig and Poultry Fair is anything to go by – proving, perhaps, that there are no longer any lightweights within the industry.

Farmex encouraged farmers to weigh themselves on ARM’s new GrowthSensor equipment – designed to monitor pig’s growth remotely – and then guess their average weight to enter a free draw.

Sean Walker employed by Shedden Farms, near York, was the winner with the nearest guess at 85.7 kg. He wins an Apple iPad Mini while runners-up, Christian Andersen, from Bedfordia Farms, Bedfordshire (86.5 kg) and Jason Evans from Midland Pig Producers, Oxfordshire (85.42kg) both receive bottles of bubbly.

“While I manage the dry sow accommodation I’m sure the growth sensors that have just been installed here will help us do a better job in these times of very tight or non-existent margins,” commented Sean.

“Over 100 people used the growth sensor to weigh themselves on the ARM Buildings stand during the Fair. Data captured by the Farmex Barn Report Pro remote monitoring system produced an overall average weight from all measurements, something that can now usefully be used on the farm,” commented Farmex managing director, Hugh Crabtree.
