This devise of the ISAH–2009 Congress coincides with the recent EU postulate in the strategy paper of the Council and is very much at the heart of the ancient and modern roots of the term “Hygiene” which is devoted to the prevention of diseases and discomfort.

Within the devise the attention in the Congress will especially be focused on the interaction between the husbandry systems and the health and welfare of individual animals and herds, the options of prevention strategies and bio-security concepts, the economical implications considering animals’ health in modern animal production, and possibilities of precision livestock farming in securing good health and welfare of animals. Measures for prevention the development and spread of diseases and pathogens in animals including those that pose a risk to human health (zoonoses) and food safety relevant infections and contaminations such as residues in food derived from animals will be discussed during the Congress. Influence of animal keeping on the environment and public health is an important issue too.
The Congress will be organized around nine different main topics.

Topics will be introduced by keynote lectures. A joint ISAH / FAO side symposium will broaden the view for the hygienic problems worldwide. Parallel sessions on specific topics will be organised when appropriate. On Thursday July 23, 2009 special sessions on horses and a tour will be organised. All topics will be covered by oral presentations and poster sessions.

The poster exhibition will take place in the lobbies of the University of Vechta, close to the session rooms. So it will be easy to reach for the Congress participants during the coffee breaks and during special poster sessions. Each day there will be a special time scheduled in the programme for poster presentation by the authors at the site. For the best three posters prizes will be given.
