World Nutrition Forum

Top international animal-health specialists and feed-industry experts will meet at the World Nutrition Forum 2012 to exchange knowledge on key trends in animal production and debate the major scientific, environment and leadership issues confronting the sector.

The 5th World Nutrition Forum will take place in Singapore from October 10th to October 13th 2012, bringing together more than 700 delegates from all over the world for wide-ranging discussions and expert talks on the most important trends in animal husbandry, nutrition and feed.

The livestock sector is one of the fastest growing and technologically dynamic parts of agriculture, but the current growth and transition process brings potential environmental cost and human-health risks with, as well as problems related to resource allocation and longterm sustainability. Global meat and dairy consumption has nearly doubled since 1990. Declines in feed prices in real terms and increases in productivity could only be achieved through specialization, improved processing technologies and enhanced management. The concomitant increase in demand and challenges posed by changing consumer behavior and requirements moved the focus from food security to product safety, accompanied by a broader diversity and quality of meat.

Foremost among considerations in feed formulation is the nutritive value of the feed in relation to the animal and its performance potential. This is measured using parameters such as daily weight gain, nutrient digestibility, feed conversion rates, fertility and hatchability. Any feedstuff, feeding concept and feed additive has to prove its efficiency by improving at least one of these parameters. In addition to performance enhancement, the avoidance of undesirable contaminants and the counteraction of their possible negative impacts on animal performance are attached with an increasing importance in livestock nutrition – so called feed safety.

Morning Sessions  - Sessions "Profit"

Feed costs constitute the main expense in animal production, up to two-thirds of total costs in broiler production for instance. Scientific trials have documented the positive relationship between diet quality and feed conversion efficiency. While lower feed costs may bring about a reduction in production costs, there is the associated risk of a negative impact on animal performance. Quality feed additives, on the other hand, can help producers improve efficiency in animal production through better feed conversion rates and enhanced animal performance. Investments made in science-based feed formulations and the use of quality feed supplements go a long way in helping producers realize more efficient cost-benefit ratios in production.

Adding to the pillars of nutrition and economics in NutriEconomics® is the issue of the en­vironment, which will continue to influence the role of animal nutrition in achieving sustainable yet profitable farming. Besides growing compe­tition for agricultural commodities from the food, feed and biofuel sectors (feed security), producers are also faced with obligations to cap carbon emissions - a move that will have significant bearing on production costs.
Only by enabling producers to tackle the twin objectives of quality nutrition and economic viability, and at the same time addressing environmental concerns we can pave the way for the future of sustainable animal nutrition.
