Facts about the Pig & pork Industry in India

  • The pig population of the country is 12.79 million as per the 1992 livestock census and 13.291 million as per 1997 provisional result of census from states and constitutes around 1.30% of the total world's population.
  • The pork production stands at 4.20 lakh tonnes (1995). During 2001-02 the production of pork and pork products were estimated to be 612550 mt with 3.03% growth rate in last decade.
  • The contribution of pork products in terms of value works out to 0.80% of total livestock products and 4.32% of the meat and meat products.
  • There is a vast Scope for this industry in India as the contribution of pigs to Indian exports is very poor. About 934 tonnes of pork and pork products were exported during 1995-96. The value of pork and pork products exported is Rs. 262 lakhs against the total value of Rs. 61604 lakhs on account of meat and meat products export.

The swine industry which accounted for 80 percent of total livestock production registered a high growth in the recent Years. The gain in production was noted during these years  when more animals were slaughtered . Pork is one of the most widely eaten meats in the world, accounting for about 38% of meat production worldwide, although consumption varies widely from place to place. World pork consumption has increased by 27% from 1997 to 2005…and is still increasing, with total global pork consumption for 2005 at over 93 million metric tons (MT). Pork is the meat of choice worldwide and offers opportunities for both U.S. pork producers and foreign pork producers to expand international sales. The value of U.S. pork exports in 2005 was $2.28 billion or $22.01 per U.S. hog slaughtered (Plain, 2006).
