Tip: How to make a syringe holder

We need a container for syringes, needles, medicine bottles, sprays, and markers. Sometimes you see improvised and inadequate containers on farms, but the one presented here is very simple and functional.

In today's context of low antimicrobial use, it is increasingly important and necessary to opt for individual treatments of these products over group treatments. Individual treatment requires using instruments (syringe + needle) that are appropriate for the type of animal to be treated.

The choice of syringe will depend on the relationship between animal weight and dose to be administered, since administering a dose of 1 ml/10 kg live weight of a drug to a 250-kg sow necessarily implies having to use a syringe (non-automatic) that allows 25 ml of product to be given in a single injection. However, administering the same product to a piglet up to 50 kg live weight can be done with an automatic syringe, which can be filled manually or automatically and can usually be adjusted from 1 to 5 ml. In this way, several animals can be injected without having to continuously “refill” the syringe, which facilitates and speeds up multiple treatments.

Of course, syringes must always be well washed and disinfected, and needles should be a suitable size for the animals to be treated.

Given these different options, the last but not least important point is to be able to transport all these materials and to do so in the best possible way. For this, we need a container that allows us to carry the syringes, needles, medication bottles, sprays, markers to identify the treated animals, and even other supplies, such as a thermometer.

On farms, you sometimes see improvised and inadequate containers, but the one we present here is very simple and functional and is made with materials commonly found on the farm: a rectangular plastic bucket, plastic pipes, clamps, and metal hooks.

Three plastic tubes are attached with clamps to the bucket, which serve as compartments for three different syringes that can be used for different antibiotic or anti-inflammatory treatments. The tube length is calculated according to the length of the syringe, including the needle, so that when it is placed inside, the needle does not touch the bottom and therefore does not get damaged, although it is always best to remove the needle after each treatment. The external hooks allow it to hang from the pen dividers at a comfortable height.

The bucket is sized to accommodate the various bottles of spray marker, disinfectant, etc.

In short: all the essentials for the “treatment tour”!
