After years of continued decreases in the number of Dutch pigs exported, from over 3 million in 2018 to 704,155 in 2021, the last year 2022 saw a turnaround, with a total of 817,960 head exported, an increase of 13% over the previous year.

Germany, while suffering a 50% drop in Dutch pig imports in 2021, remained in 2022 and is still the leading destination with a 67.7% share of total Dutch pig exports. It should be noted that in previous years it had accounted for more than 90% of the share.

Although with values well below the Germans, Spain has positioned itself in recent years as the second leading destination and in this past year 2022 doubled the number of pigs imported from the Netherlands, from 48,238 in 2021 to 94,217 in 2022.

Other leading destinations behind Spain, are Belgium, with 67,205 pigs imported in 2022, an increase of 32%, Poland, which has tripled its imports in 2022 with 65,331 pigs imported (24,107 animals in 2021) and Italy with an increase of 14% (24,789 in 2022 vs. 21,806 in 2021).
