In 2016, Spain only imported about 2,000 finishing pigs annually. Five years ago that number was just over 7,500; in 2021 more than 48,000 animals were imported, and in 2022 this value doubled reaching more than 94,000 head.

The number of Dutch piglets imported in 2022 reached 1,697,247 head, although this was an increase of 9% over the previous year, the rate of growth in imports was lower than in previous years.
