The breeding sow inventory was down 9.4% (-61.4 thousand head) compared to December 2021, reaching 592.6 thousand head, of which gestating sows decreased by 6.7% (-29.1 thousand head) to 404.8 thousand head. Compared to June 2021, the number of breeding sows decreased by 13.7 thousand head (by 2.3%), including gestating sows, down by 12.9 thousand head, or 3.1%.
Compared with the structure of the pig population registered at the beginning of December 2021, the share of pigs for slaughter increased in 2022 (by 2.2%). On the other hand, the share of piglets, growers, and pigs for rearing decreased by 1.3%, 0.7%, and 0.2% respectively.
From January to November 2022 (according to preliminary data), imports of live pigs totaled 6.39 million head, 5.7% higher than in the same period the year prior, of which imports of piglets and growers increased by 4.3%. The average weight per imported head in the period was 35.3 kilograms compared to 33.2 kilograms in 2021.
The largest shares of the national pig inventory were held by the provinces of Wielkopolska (35.7%), Mazovia (12.8%), Łódź (10.1%), and Kujawsko-Pomorskie (8.8%). The provinces with the smallest shares were Lubuskie (0.7%), Podkarpackie (0.8%), and Małopolskie (1.0%).
In December 2022, the purchase price of live weight at PLN 7.87 per kg was 6.0% higher than the month prior and increased by 70.8% on an annual basis.
The threat of African swine fever (ASF) continues. In 2022, the Chief Veterinary Inspectorate registered 14 outbreaks of ASF in pigs, affecting 3064 animals.
