Belgium – Decrease in swine population

The latest figures published for the livestock census carried out on 15 November 2009 show a 10.6% decrease in the swine population in Belgium, dropping from 6,207,595 head in 2008 to 5,547,134 in 2009.

The latest figures published for the livestock census carried out on 15 November 2009 show a 10.6% decrease in the swine population in Belgium, dropping from 6,207,595 head in 2008 to 5,547,134 in 2009.

Decreases were observed of more than 18% in the number of replacement primiparous gilts, and of 12% in the number of piglets of less than 20 kg live weight.

Big differences were seen between regions, with a decrease in the swine population of 11.4% in Flanders, and an increase of 1.8% in Wallonia.
