Pfizer Animal HealthCanadian swine producers can now vaccinate for mycoplasma pneumonia when they process baby pigs. A new label claim makes RespiSure-ONE the only vaccine approved for administration at one day of age.

Early protection against mycoplasma pneumonia plays a key role in keeping pigs healthy throughout their lives, and vaccination as early as one day of age with RespiSure-ONE effectively generates long-term protective immunity in young pigs against M. hyopneumoniae. This bacterial pathogen is the cause of one of the most common diseases in the swine industry, reducing average daily gain, decreasing feed efficiency and possibly leading to secondary respiratory diseases. Pigs may be infected with the pathogen within the first three weeks of life, making early protection a key to keeping pigs healthy and productive throughout their life.

“Early immunity plays a critical role in lifetime growth, feed efficiency and weight gain in pigs,” says Walter Heuser, DVM, Swine Business Unit Director for Pfizer Animal Health. “The new one day of age claim with RespiSure-ONE gives producers the flexibility to vaccinate for mycoplasma at processing, to ensure piglets have ample time to build up immunity before the risk of mycoplasma pneumonia increases.”

RespiSure-ONE is the only vaccine labeled to aid in reducing the severity of colonization and shedding of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. In addition, studies have shown that a single 2 mL dose of RespiSure-ONE administered within the first week of life delivers up to 25 weeks of immunity.

Efficacy of RespiSure-ONE at one day of age has been demonstrated in Pfizer Animal Health challenge studies. Pigs receiving a single dose of RespiSure-ONE at one day of age were challenged with M. hyopneumoniae at two weeks of age and had significantly lower lung lesions and concentrations of M. hyopneumoniae in the lungs, plus reduced shedding of M. hyopneumoniae during four weeks post-challenge period.

RespiSure-ONE is available exclusively through Canadian veterinarians. Consult your veterinarian regarding the appropriate timing of RespiSure-ONE vaccination in your herd.
