Genomic expression profiling in lymph nodes with lymphoid depletion from porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2)-infected pigs

[swine abstracts]

To gain insight into the interaction between the virus and host cells, microarrays were used to analyze changes in genomic expression of lymph nodes following PCV2 infection and negative control in pigs.

Using serum cortisol to distinguish between acute stress and pain response following castration in piglets

[swine abstracts]

This study evaluated the difference between the levels of cortisol in the plasma of piglets under stress (simulated castration) or in pain (castration), under controlled conditions.

Intra-uterine insemination with low numbers of frozen–thawed boar spermatozoa in spontaneous and induced ovulating sows under field conditions

[swine abstracts]

The present study was conducted to evaluate non-return rate (NR), farrowing rate (FR), and number of total pigs born/litter (TB) of weaned sows after intra-uterine insemination (IUI) using low numbers of frozen–thawed (FT) spermatozoa.

Longitudinal field study to assess sow level risk factors associated with stillborn piglets

[swine abstracts]

The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for stillborn piglets at sow level in commercial pig herds in northern Belgium. In total, 545 sows of 22 pig herds were included in the study. Stillborn piglets were observed in 48.3% of the litters and the mean stillbirth rate of the sows was 7.5%.

Post-weaning Altrenogest treatment in primiparous sows; the effect of duration and dosage on follicular development and consequences for early pregnancy

[swine abstracts]

Post-weaning treatment with Altrenogest of first litter sows influenced follicle size and shortened the follicular phase, but did not affect ovulation rate or early embryonic development.

Farm practices survey and modelling to estimate monthly NH3 emissions from swine production in 12 Ecoregions of Canada

[swine abstracts]

This paper describes a new model to estimate NH3 emissions from the swine sector, relying heavily on a recent survey of swine producers to determine the present N and manure management practices.

The effect of type of rooting material and space allowance on exploration and abnormal behaviour in growing pigs

[swine abstracts]

The experiment aimed to investigate the effect of type of rooting material and space allowance on explorative and abnormal behaviour in growing pigs. Thirty-six pens with partly slatted concrete floor were allocated to one of four treatments: (1) low space allowance and maize silage as rooting material, (2) high space allowance and maize silage as rooting material, (3) low space allowance and straw as rooting material, and (4) high space allowance and straw as rooting material.
